Individual Library Links to Catalog (eLibrary) PLUS user_id and library name
Sirsi/catalog Link Ideas
catalog allows multiple ways to link directly to holdings and collections of holdings. This page is an attempt to document some of those direct link choices by offering examples.
In most cases, the user can determine the direct links by looking at what’s linked into catalog. For example:
http://catalog.tln.lib.mi.us/uhtbin/cgisirsi/CpJenCFFAg/NORTHVILLE/287090074/121/PUBLISHFIC
The above provides a direct link to Publisher’s Weekly Fiction
listings. This link is ONLY usable when logged in. You can see two
sections of the link have a long list of LETTERS (CpJenCFFAg) and
NUMBERS (287090074) that will be different from session to session.
These are SESSION COOKIES. You can create the direct links by
using either X (upper or lower case, doesn’t matter) or 0 (that’s ZERO,
not an “OH”) in place of the session cookies. So the above listed link
becomes:
http://catalog.tln.lib.mi.us/uhtbin/cgisirsi/x/NORTHVILLE/x/57/121/PUBLISHFIC?user_id=NORTHVILLEWEB
However, you cannot pull links directly from catalog and expect them to work, even if you replace the cookies. It appears there is a “code” used to designate a link as coming from outside the system. Note in the above example that 57 is added into the link. 57 will be in every single catalog link you make. Basically add /57/ after the first 3 sections following /uhtbin/cgisirsi/x/x/x/57/. You must also plug in a “user_id” at the end. See the table above for the appropriate user_id for your library.
Want to use these for your library? Substitute anything that says NORTHVILLE with the name of your library. You can find a list of the correct Library names/codes within the Detailed info page on Book Lists listed below.
EASY WAY
With the Sirsi eLibrary catalog, you can use BOOKMARK to collect direct URLs for almost ANYTHING within the catalog.
Search for ANYTHING, and get to the desired result.
Step 1: Click on BOOKMARK THIS PAGE
Step 2: COPY the URL in LOCATION or actually BOOKMARK it by clicking ADD for later use OR just paste into any text editor as needed.
You can collect direct links to just about any specific search combination or title in this fashion for whatever usage you need. You can also continue to use the more complex fashion outlined below that was developed for iBistro.
Direct Holding Links
You can use ISBN or DBCN to create direct item links. Find the DBCN or ISBN of a given item, and then use it as follows:
Item Link Example with ISBN
http://catalog.tln.lib.mi.us/uhtbin/cgisirsi/x/x/x/57/5?user_id=NORTHVILLEWEB&library=NORTHVILLE&searchdata1=0439136369
Item Link Example with DBCN
http://catalog.tln.lib.mi.us/uhtbin/cgisirsi/x/x/x/57/5?user_id=NORTHVILLEWEB&library=NORTHVILLE&searchdata1=AAO-4111
Direct Links to Features of the eLibrary Catalog
Most of these links are short and easy to use. Include your library NAME (in most examples thsi is NORTHVILLE) and the user_id on the end (in most examples this is NORTHVILLEWEB). Some examples do NOT include a library name.
Following http://catalog.tln.lib.mi.us/uhtbin/cgisirsi/ in some examples is “0/x/0″. Anywhere you see this example, you can add your LIBRARY NAME (not the user_id) to limit the listings EXPLICITLY to your library holdings by replacing the “x”. A few examples have NORTHVILLE, TLN or NOVI as examples.
Browse Subject and Kids Catalog have literally hundreds of different individual sections you can link to using the method of removing the session cookies and replacing them with x or 0… too many to list here.

Links to catalog Best Seller Book Lists
(All demonstration links using NORTHVILLEWEB as user name… in theory, the inclusion of this ?user_id=NORTHVILLEWEB on the end of the URL plus the inclusion of NORTHVILLE in the 6th level of the URL *SHOULD* allow the library name to appear at top, but something needs to be fixed in the config by TLN to enable this)All of these use the same basic link setup with the variation being called in the 8th level of the URL with different names for the Best Seller lists (like NYFICTION or PUBLISHFIC).

Recommended Reading Lists Links
These links are a bit more complicated. Variations take place at the 7th level of the URL and the list is called by the end of the URL (122/2006/REC_READ_LIST=/REC_LIST_TITLE=) Again, you can pull this information directly from catalog itself, and remove the session cookies accordingly for your purposes. Again, the inclusion of NORTHVILLE at the 5th level of the URL should enable the Library name to appear at the top of this list, but it does not.

If you do not want to limit to only your library’s holdings and instead want to search all libraries’ holdings, you can remove that second line, <input type=”hidden” name=”library” value=”TLN”>.

Almost the same as the Quick Search alone, but adding a section with attribute names. Make you you use this text EXACTLY as listed. Even a minor typo here renders all limits null.A working example is below:
The Incredible Amazon/Barnes & Noble to catalog Bookmarklet
Installing
MSIE 5.x or 6.x (where X = version #… any 5 or 6 version)
LEFT click on the link below and DRAG it over to the “LINKS” section in
MSIE. It will prompt you, saying this may be “dangerous”. Most assuredly
it is NOT. Click yes.
Mozilla/Firefox
LEFT click and drag the link below up the the toolbar. Let go of left button and drop it there.
| NDL Bookmarklet |
Using the Bookmarklet
This tool is really designed for Librarians. The purpose is to allow Searches in Amazon or Barnes & Noble to be quickly duplicated on the TLN catalog catalog.
First, search for something in Amazon or Barnes & Noble. Say, Ric Flair’s “To Be The Man”.
Next, Load the page with the actual book listing (showing price, etc.)
Then, drag the Bookmarklet down from where you place it by left clicking
on the NDL Bookmarklet link and holding the left button down. Drag that
down to the Amazon screen.
A POP UP screen will then load with the catalog holding (assuming it has been cataloged).
How’s that work?
Actually, pretty simple: the bookmarklet uses a regexp (Regular Expression) run via JavaScript to find the ISBN of the material on Amazon or Barnes & Noble. It then spawns a simple search for the ISBN on TLN’s catalog catalog. Pretty slick, eh?
I want more
Okay then. Here’s what the actual javascript looks like for Northville Library:
javascript:var%20re=/([\/-]|is[bs]n=)(\d{7,9}[\dX])/i;if(re.test(location.href)==true){var%20isbn=RegExp.$2;void(win=window.open('http://catalog.tln.lib.mi.us'+'/uhtbin/cgisirsi/x/x/x/57/5?user_id=NORTHVILLEWEB&library=NORTHVILLE&searchdata1='+isbn,'LibraryLookup','scrollbars=1,resizable=1,location=1,width=575,height=500'))}
Replace the sections inherent to Northville with your library. A list of such can be found above. You can change the window spawn size, or re-design this to go to a different library catalog.
Props
The Bookmarklet script is just an adaption of Andrew Mutch’s script for TLN and the Web2 catalog.
