Who Publishes What?

When evaluating materials, it helps to know that almost all print and audio/visual materials must go through a basic process that helps to control the quality of content:

Information in
Printed and Audio/Visual Materials

Information on
Web Sites

  • often a difficult submission/ acceptance process
  • edited by a third person
  • reviewed by several people before publication
  • authors usually have education or experiences which provide them with credibility
  • no submission process required
  • no editing required
  • no review required
  • no education or experience required

Wait! There's an exception!!!

Articles that are available using web-based databases are actually printed materials conveniently available via the Internet for library patrons. You can assume they have gone through the same processes that print and audio/visual materials go through.
