Reviewing Search Tips



Be specific
• Use nouns and unique words in your search
• Put the most important words first
• Use multiple terms when possible
More words will give less results

If you were interested in when a Harry Potter book would become a movie you could search:
harry potter chamber secrets movie

Use quotation marks around phrases so the search engine will search for the words as a phrase not as separate words If you were searching for two words together, search like this:
"harry potter"
Limit by domain - In Advance Search you can limit your search to a specific type of domain.

Limiting your last search to .edu. (educational institutions).

  1. Click on Advance Search
  2. Go down to Domain. Make sure "Only" is selected"
  3. Type in edu in the box.

You should see "harry potter" "chamber of secrets " site:org in the Google Search box.

Use a minus sign in front of a word to exclude it in the results

Find websites on the book Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets not the movie:
"harry potter" "chamber of secrets" -movie
Searching for Synonyms - use OR (in capital letters) to look for multiple words that have similar meaning.
